What is RFID?

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses radio waves to identify and track tags attached to objects and, in some cases, persons. Specific radio frequencies energize and activate RFID tags allowing RFID readers to access stored information. Unlike passive tags, battery-powered RFID tags constantly transmit and don’t need to be energized.

RFID was invented during WWII

Rudimentary forms of the technology served as listening devices that radio waves could energize or as powered transponders that identified friendly aircraft during WWII. In our modern world, the best example of the technology today would be the debit/credit card in your wallet.

How does RFID work?

How RFID works in a nutshell

RFID waves are the same as your car's radio but at different frequencies and for specific uses. For it to work, you'll need a reader/scanner (the transceiver) and a tag/label (the transponder). RFID readers/scanners transmit radio waves that energize RFID tags and read the stored data. Unlike barcodes, it doesn't need a direct line of sight or proximity. However, a reader's transceive range can vary; Zebra's RFD40, for example, can read tags up to 20 feet.

Types of RFID

Low Frequency (LF)- covers 30 to 300KHz with slow read speeds but is less prone to radio wave interruption. For example, livestock tracking uses low frequency.

High Frequency (HF)- operates at 3 to 30MHz, and is moderately prone to radio interference. Useful for ticketing, checkout, and data transfers.

Ultra-high Frequency (UHF)- starts from 860 to 960MHz. While most prone to radio interference, manufacturers like Zebra have designed antennas that experience less interference. Most use cases for RFID belong to the UHF category because tags and readers are easier and cheaper to manufacture. UHF applications range from inventory management to anti-theft and anti-counterfeiting systems to wireless device configuration.

Tags can typically store up to 2KB of data or 128KB for some battery-powered tags. Tags are like mini radio receivers; they contain a circuit, and an antenna, enclosed in durable plastic. Modern RFID readers can read battery-powered active tags or energize passive tags. Tags can be read only or read-write. Read-write tags require specialized equipment like Zebra's portals, making deployment harder.

Scanner? Reader? Printer? Portal? What’s the difference?

Scanners and readers mean the same thing, in that they both scan barcodes and read RFID tags and labels. The two most common types of RFID readers are handheld and fixed RFID readers.

RFID Printers

Is RFID risky?

Active tags with read-write access are risky. Thankfully, most tags and labels are passive and read-only, with encryption built into the circuits and readers. Most readers have radio shielding to prevent radio interference and signal cloning attempts.

Cargo theft across the supply chain

Cargo theft is on the rise. 2023 saw a 68%1 increase over the previous year, helped by a surge in organized theft, a mix of cyber-attacks, and thieves staking out distribution centers and warehouses before an attack.

As cargo theft becomes more sophisticated, organized crime and petty thieves exploit security vulnerabilities from the distribution center to the store, whether by air, rail, truck, or the facility itself. The bottom line is that cargo theft is very low-risk, has a very high reward, and is easy to execute, attracting more criminals away from traditional crime.

 

How cargo theft costs millions

In Q2 2023, businesses across the country lost over $44m2 due to cargo theft. With a staggering 582 theft incidents reported. That number may be even higher due to most cargo theft cases going unreported, as law enforcement isn’t required to register cargo theft data to the national UCR Program.

Where does this all happen?

Warehouses and distribution centers top the list, with parking lots close behind and truck stops at third.

What gets stolen the most?

Household goods followed food and beverage items at a close second, and electronics were at third.

As ridiculous as avocado or toilet paper theft sounds, the resale of stolen products is lucrative enough for criminals to take the risk. It is easy for criminals to quickly resell goods without any barcodes or serial numbers, such as produce, without facing any risk.

While selling goods with serial numbers is more difficult to resell, secondary markets and used goods apps help move some stolen items. However, most stolen items are fenced and returned to the supply chain.

But it’s not all consumer goods; sophisticated cargo thieves target high-value commodities like copper, aluminum, artworks, and other precious metals. And eventually, make their way to foreign markets.

 

Types of attacks

Misdirection attacks

Thieves use stolen identities to obtain freight information and redirect it somewhere else.

Cyber attacks

Phishing attacks are commonplace these days and the easiest to deploy. A simple misclick can open up shipping manifests to criminals who can make changes to redirect shipments elsewhere. They can also study shipping routes and schedules to intercept the freight in transit later.

Impersonation/Hijacking

After a successful phishing attack, criminals can hijack employee identities and accounts to evade identity checks from brokers or at terminals.

Attack at the distribution/warehouse

This method of attack has become prevalent in recent years as criminals stake out distribution centers and warehouses to learn schedules and movement around the yard. Yards are often left unguarded, making it really easy to enter the facility without alerting anyone.

Pilfering
